Dating can get expensive. We get it. While it’s great to want to surprise your significant other with a special surprise every weekend, that’s, more often than not, not very financially responsible, especially when the majority of Halifax’s population is made up of secondary education students who are either working only part time or not at all.

Fear not, hopeless romantics with only $5 in your pocket: we’ve rounded up some great activities that you and your boo can participate in absolutely free of charge, no matter the season, throughout our beautiful city of Halifax. This way, you can have a great date, and save a little money for the perfect Christmas present to impress your honey with!

1. Skating at the oval

Whether it’s summer or winter, the Emera Oval is the perfect spot for couples on a budget. You can rent rollerblades or skates (depending on the season) for free with valid government ID, and skate the day away!

2. Point Pleasant Park

For couples who like to get out and explore nature, PPP is the perfect inner city free getaway. Walk along the many trails that will transport you into a Group of Seven painting, or pack a tasty lunch and some blankets for the perfect Oceanside picnic.

3. Book a tour of Province House

If you and your boo are interested in learning more about Nova Scotia Legislature, book a free tour of Province House, the beautiful historical legislature building on Hollis St. This is a great date idea for couples who are always looking to learn something new about their city!

4. Seaport Farmers Market

Admission to the Market is free, and if you have a few extra dollars to spare, you can enjoy all the food and crafts booths with a delicious cider in hand. The season displays are perfect for getting inspiration if you and your love are in the midst of decorating your home for the holidays!

5. Walk the boardwalk

For a less action packed, more mindlessly-spend-time-with-your-honey kind of date, walk one of Canada’s longest boardwalks along the waterfront. The Halifax boardwalk spans 4km and is a great stroll weather it’s the middle of winter or the blistering heat of summer.

6. Titanic graveyard

The Titanic graveyard, more officially known as the Fairview Lawn Cemetery, is a creepy yet beautiful date idea, whether you’re brave enough to visit at night, or you and your date just want a short stroll. Best known for being the final resting place for over 100 victims of the sinking of the RMS Titanic, this graveyard offers a spooky yet fascinating blast to the past.

7. Herring Cove

For a quick “getaway” from the city, why not plan a trip with your s/o over to Herring Cove. Hop on the 20 bus, or, if you have a car, drive just 10 minutes out from downtown Halifax, and get out at Herring Cove Provincial Park reserve for some beautiful and romantic coastal views.

8. Duncan’s cove

Similarly to Herring Cove, approximately 20 minutes outside of Halifax, Duncan’s Cove Hiking Trails has some of the most beautiful ocean views in the country. Grab your date and some binoculars, and visit the trails in the springtime to increase your chance of spotting some whales! The WWII era bunkers/lookout stations along the trail make for fascinating spots for couples who love history.

9. Rock climbing at the Dalplex

A fun active date idea for students and Dalplex members, the Dalplex offers a free, supervised, one hour class where you can try your hand at bouldering (free-hand rock climbing without belays and ropes!) at Dalhousie’s awesome rock climbing wall.
