14 Shows And Movies On Netflix You Didn't Know Were Filmed In Toronto

You may think that film and television producers flock to the typical American hotspots like Los Angeles and New York when considering locations for their next projects; and while in some cases that is true, a lot of TV shows and movies are still filmed up north in Toronto every year. Producers love filming in Canada these days because of the favourable conversion rate for the American dollar - in other words, they're getting more bang for their buck by using our studios and our cities, though they might often try to conceal any on-screen hints that their work was filmed north of the border. Aside from the obvious examples of Suits, Being Erica, and Degrassi: Next Class that 99% of Torontonians know of by now, below is a compilation of shows and films shot in Toronto that you can currently catch on Netflix!

Note: An asterisk (*) signifies that the show/film is available on the American version of Netflix (because we all know how to oh-so-sneakily change our IP addresses by this point, yes?).

1. Covert Affairs (5 seasons, 2010-14)

Stars: Piper Perabo, Christopher Gorham, Kari Matchett

Expect: A fresh-faced, inexperienced Annie Walker works under the guidance of blind tech operative Auggie to face the challenges that come with being a CIA operative.

2. Pacific Rim* (2013)

Stars: Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi

Expect: A war between humans and monstrous sea creatures, and a former pilot must pair up with a trainee in order to - you guessed it - save the world from the impending apocalypse.

3. Heroes Reborn (1 season, 2015-16)

Expect: A terrorist attack leaves a Texan city destroyed, and because of being blamed for the tragedy, anyone with supernatural abilities are either hiding out or trying to evade those among them with less-than-honourable motives.

Expect: The Boston Globe investigation into the scandal of child molestation within the local Catholic Church.

5. Hannibal (3 seasons, 2013-15)

Expect: The exploration of the early relationship between the famed Dr. Hannibal and his patient Will Graham, a young FBI criminal profiler. Graham is a bit unnerved by his ability to empathize with serial killers, to say the least. It doesn't help that the doctor seems to be manipulating Graham's sanity, either.

6. Enemy* (2013)

Expect: A man searches for his doppelganger after spotting him in a movie.

Expect: Everybody over the age of 21 in the small town of Pretty Lake has died from some unknown disease, and Wiley Day, the pregnant teenage daughter of a minister, must band together with whoever is left to survive in the quarantined town.

Expect: Elena Michaels is a photographer in Toronto. Normal enough. Then a supernatural world of werewolves appears from Elena's past and makes its way back into her life. Not so normal. It doesn't help that she's also the only living female werewolf in a mystical world she'd much rather forget about.

11. Schitt's Creek (2 seasons, 2015 - )

Stars: Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, Dan Levy

Expect: Successful businessman. His soap star wife. Their two pampered kids, a son and socialite daughter. They go suddenly broke and thus forced to leave their wealthy life behind to find themselves now living up Schitt's Creek (get it? geeeeet it?).

Filmed At: Unfortunately, all IMDb will tell us on this one is simply that it's filmed in Toronto. Ah well, still counts! ;)

Expect: A group of people wakes up on a deserted spaceship without being able to remember who they are or why they're there, so they intend to look for answers.

14. Goosebumps (4 seasons, 1995-98)

Stars: R. L. Stine, Kathryn Short, Cody Jones

Filmed At: Similar to Dark Matter, all we know from IMDb about this one's filming location is that it shared screen time between Toronto and Bellevue, Washington.

Expect: Ahh, good ol' Goosebumps. Loved or hated it, this 90s show was likely a staple in your before-bed-TV time as a kid. If by some chance you've still never heard of it though, Goosebumps focuses on a different 'spooky story' every episode.
