In order to claim you’re from Toronto, you actually have to be from there. Such is an unspoken rule that Torontonians often pressure everyone else in the GTA to follow. Quoting Drake lyrics and using “ahlie” or “wallahi” in your everyday speech is not enough to be considered a true Torontonian. Call it petty, but for many people in the city, the only valid indicators of true Toronto status is one’s address and postal code. As the following map shows, Toronto is officially the region that includes East York, North York, Etobicoke and Scarborough: Residents from suburban areas like Brampton, Mississauga and Durham are often criticized for putting “Toronto” in their bios when they technically aren’t from there. Some argue that they should able to do so because they work or go to school in the city, but many people who actually live in Toronto aren’t having it: If ur not from the CITY OF TORONTO (yellow) then ur not part of the City of Toronto. Call it a pride thing or an overreaction, but it makes sense that people would get annoyed by others claiming to be from somewhere they’re not. After all, isn’t it like... Geographical appropriation… Or something... On the other hand, it could be flattering that people want to be part of Toronto so much they’re willing to lie about where they’re from. It all depends on how you look at it, I guess... Which side are you on?
