Do you enjoy a crisp bitter coffee to start off your morning or a good gin & tonic to end off the week? According to a recent study done by psychologists at the Innsbruck University of Austria, individuals with a particular preference for bitter-tasting food and drinks are more likely to have psychopathic tendencies and exhibit signs of sadism and narcissism. That being said, such individuals are prone to being cold hearted, vain, selfish and are basically assholes who get off on other people's pain and suffering. In an experiment from the same university, 500 men and women were shown a long list of foods with equal amounts of sweet, salty, bitter, spicy and sour foods and were asked to rate their fondness for the foods on a scale from 1 to 6. Following that experiment, the same participants were also asked to com plete four separate personality questionnaires measuring levels of aggression, emotional stability and tendencies toward sadism. The same experiments were then repeated for another group of 500 to confirm the results of the first. Based on the results of the experiments, it showed that majority of individuals who showed more interest in bitter foods and drinks also showed potential signs of sadism, lack of empathy and emotional instability-- signs you would see in a potential psychopath. Also, cooperation and agreeableness were definitely lacking in the results. It's not confirmed why these type of people prefer such bitter foods but it's suggested that they might experience a 'thrill' from the bitterness. Bitterness is usually associated with being poisonous therefore not everyone is comfortable with the intensity of the flavour however for people with sadistic traits, bitter foods and drinks may be compared to as a roller coaster ride where they relish in the things that induce fear. So do you think you could be a psychopath due to your love for bitter things? Don't take it too hard (I mean it, don't go all psychopath and start throwing chairs at the windows...please) as Oxford University research psychologists have found that psychopaths are more likely to be smart, assertive, and cool under pressure. That being said, these are perfect qualities to for strong leaders in the business world... or the next potential serial killer. Yikes. Source: EveningStandard Follow us on Snapchat: narcitytoronto
