*We have reached out to Edmonton Police to verify the release date of Rhoads. We will provide an update once we confirm the date. The Edmonton Police have recently come under fire after putting out a press release regarding a convicted sex offender who will be released to the public. Considering jail is supposed to be where inmates learn not to re-offend, it was quite shocking for Canadians, especially Edmonton natives when they saw this tweet from their local police: Via @EdmontonPolice The tweet linked a memo that essentially warns Edmonton locals that the convicted sex offender could be dangerous, and they presume he most likely will strike again. Yet, the offender has still been released. Naturally, a lot of Canadians were not reassured by the tweet. If anything, they were angered that the police are releasing a person that the public needs to be cautioned about, even after serving his time: So... Our legal system says it's a good idea to release a "convicted violent and sexual offender" & EPS "believe he will commit another violent offence against someone while in the community."How do you explain that to the family of the person he'll main or murder next? #Protect — Scott F. (@Scott_F_Canada) September 28, 2018 The man in question is a 51-year-old named Michael Rhoads and the police claim that he "has a history of violence towards intimate partners and strangers he has encountered on the street or in bars." Also adding that Rhoads' "risk of violence increases significantly when under the influence of alcohol and drugs." Police describe him as being five-foot-seven and weighing 208 pounds. They also included a picture for the public to identify the individual they should be cautious about: Via @EdmontonPolice In an effort to reassure the public about his release, the police have also released the terms Rhoads must follow in order to stay free. They are encouraging the public to call police if they see him breaking any of these rules. 1. He has a curfew or 10 p.m to 6 a.m every day 2. He is not allowed to buy or consume any alcohol or drugs regardless of whether they are prescription or not 3. He is not allowed to be in any licensed establishment other than a restaurant where he can get a meal. Meaning he is banned from entering liquor stores. 4. He cannot have any kinds of drug paraphernalia in his possession such as a bong, vape pen, syringe or self-made pipe 5. He is not allowed to leave the Edmonton area unless he has written approval from the police 6. He is not allowed to be in possession of any weapons including knives unless he is eating dinner 7. He is banned from having a sexual relationship or taking any woman on dates unless he identifies her to the police where they will make sure the woman is 100% aware of Rhoads' past While it is definitely frustrating for people living in Edmonton to know that a convicted and possibly dangerous sex offender is roaming around their city, it's important to remember the man did serve his time. Meaning the Edmonton Police really have nothing else they can do legally to keep Rhoads contained - unless he breaks the rules that ensure his freedom. Police have made sure to include that important point to the public as well, meaning any action taken against him should only be done if he is actually doing something wrong. On top of that, the extent of any action a person should take against him is a phone call to the police. To reach Edmonton police on the matter if anything does happen, the force asks witnesses to contact 780-423-4567. Source: Global News
