A Calgary pet store is appealing for help from the public after it was broken into and two puppies were stolen at 1:30 AM on Saturday morning. According to the store, thieves broke in by using an ice-pick to shatter the shop window, showering the litter of nine-week-old puppies in sharp glass.\nCalgary police confirm this saying they believe that the Top Dog Store was broken into at approximately 1:30 AM on Saturday morning when the front window of the shop was smashed, using what the store owner believes to be an ice pick. The smashed glass shattered on top of the litter of puppies that were sleeping in their kennels, and two of the dogs were captured and stolen.\nThe store owner is now concerned about the welfare of the two animals, as he believes they could have been hurt by the large amount of glass that fell on them.\nAccording to reports from the store owner, when staff arrived at the property early on Saturday morning, the puppies that had been left behind were covered in glass and terrified, but fortunately not injured.\nSpeaking to Global News, the owner of the pet store expressed his concern that the puppies could be hurt. He said, “It was really awful because they smashed glass all over the dogs. We’re worried that the dogs maybe got injured or cut and we’re just really worried about their safety and their well-being.”\nThe Top Dog Store | Facebook\nThe Top Dog Store | Facebook\nThe Top Dog Store | Facebook\nIn a post on their Facebook page, the Top Dog Store wrote, “Overnight, some heartless dirty thieves smashed a window and smashed a puppy kennel, showering glass all over the little babies inside.”\nThe post went on to say, “Our sweet, gentle Boston Terrier girl and our adorable little Puggle girl were grabbed through the broken glass and stolen. We are deeply concerned for the well-being of our gorgeous girls, as they were likely cut by the glass shards as they were pulled from the kennel.”\nSTOLEN PUPPIES 😰😰😰 Our Top Dog team needs your help!!!! \n\nOvernight, some heartless dirty thieves smashed a window and...Posted by The Top Dog Store on Saturday, July 6, 2019\nThe Calgary Top Dog Store claims on their website to be taking a stand against puppy mills and substandard breeders by “supporting quality providers who care for their animals in a humane and ethical fashion.” The website says that the store obtains their puppies from local breeders, and then sells them on in their store.\nThe owner told Global News that he doesn't believe the theft has any relation to past protests or people that are critical of his business. He said, “I’ve never dealt with anything like this before,” he said. “This seems just kind of surreal. I’m sad that it happened and disappointed but mostly just concerned for the health of the puppies.”\nPolice believe that the theft could have been targeted, as the dogs were the only thing stolen from the property. The store owner, Robert Church, believes one puppy was targeted in particular, as the breed is rare in Canada.\nHe said, “We think that it was a targeted incident because they went after the only Boston Terrier that we have and the Boston Terriers are kind of rare and hard to find.”\nFor this reason, Church adds, they are worried about the welfare of the animal. “It’s very upsetting. It’s very emotional, and we feel kind of helpless because those are animals are in our care and we’re responsible for them, and now we don’t know where they are. We don’t know how they’re being looked after,” he said.\nAccording to reports, the scene has been dusted for prints and the break-and-enter detail of Calgary police will be obtaining CCTV footage, which the store confirms it does have on the property.\nBoth animals also have been microchipped for permanent identification, which will help the investigation if the dogs are located.\nIf you have any information about the theft, you can call the police non-emergency line at 403-266-1234.
