Big news, movie lovers! Tonight Cineplex is officially opening the doors to their second Canadian 4DX theatre at Scotiabank Theatre in Calgary. This amazing new experience comes to us in partnership between CJ 4DPLEX and Cineplex. Canada already has one 4DX theatre in Toronto, Ontario, which makes the Calgary location the second 4DX theatre in all of Canada. The debut will take place at Scotiabank Theatre Chinook with Universal Pictures’ action-packed film, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. Tonight’s screenings are at 6:45 p.m. and 10:45 p.m., so you better get your tickets. To learn more about what exactly a 4DX movie experience is like, Narcity spoke to Sarah Van Lange, executive director of communications at Cineplex. Cineplex “The 4DX experience is a truly adverse movie-going experience,” Van Lange told Narcity in an interview. She explained that the theatre’s seats move backward and forwards and have effects programmed right into them. 4DX auditoriums are fully equipped with fans, smoke machines, snowmakers, and everything needed to make you feel like you’re in a movie rather than watching a movie. Cineplex “There’s also atmospheric effects within the auditorium. There’s wind, rain, snow, bubbles, lighting, and fog,” she explained. “There’s also scent that’s incorporated into the film as well,” she told us. “In Fast & Furious, there’s a smell of burning rubber and gun powder.” Or, if there’s a breakfast scene in a movie, you might smell orange juice or coffee. Van Lange told us that these little nuances are so subtle and realistic that you might not even notice they’re happening. Cineplex Van Lange told us that she visited the lab where they program the 4DX content. She outlined the procedure for us, explaining that the lab receives the final version of a film and work on a quick turnaround to add the effects. “There’s one person who’s dedicated to putting the effects into the seats. As of now, you’ll have to head to their first location in Toronto at Cineplex Cinemas Queensway and VIP or Calgary’s own Scotiabank Theatre Chinook.
