Canadian students are finally seeing some financial relief. Part of that will come in the form of tuition aid for those who volunteer over the summer. The Canada Student Service Grant can provide up to $5000 for education costs. In his April 22 address to the country, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a sweeping $9 billion aid package aimed specifically at students. Part of this is the Canada Student Service Grant, aimed at assisting students who choose to volunteer over the summer. They can get anywhere between $1000 and up to $5000 toward their tuition payments through the grant, depending on their hours. "Your energy and your skills can do a lot of good right now," Trudeau said. He also noted that volunteering is a great way to build experience, meet contacts, and give back to the community. This new grant is being introduced in addition to the Canada Emergency Student Benefit, which provides $1250 a month to students from May to August. Those with dependents or disabilities can receive up to $1750 a month. On top of all of this, the Prime Minister also announced the doubling of grants for the 2020 to 2021 school year, as well as the extension of federal graduate research scholarships and postdoctoral fellowships. "To promote a sustainable economic recovery, we need a strong workforce and good job opportunities for young people." The federal government has already been providing financial aid to people who are making less than $1000 a month through the Canada Emergency Response Benefit.
