Canada's Leaders Are Talking About Reopening The US Border But Only For Separated Families
You wouldn't be able to cross over for a vacation or a shopping trip.
Almost reunited and it almost feels so good. The Canada-U.S. border could be reopened but only for families that are separated. So, that wouldn't change the current closure agreement between the two countries.
Justin Trudeau discussed the possibility of letting people cross the border to reunite families during a press conference and he's already been in talks with premiers.
He's heard instances of close family members being separated because of the border closure due to citizenship.
So, the government is looking into ways of allowing children, spouses or parents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents to reunite under strict conditions.
Trudeau had a call with Canada's premiers the night before and they discussed this possibility.
"There are a number of premiers who feel that for reasons of compassion we should and could move forward with this measure," he said. "There are others who expressed a certain amount of concern about it."
He has made commitments to them that any issues or concerns about the border would be brought to them.
"The borders are an issue that deeply concern all the provinces," Trudeau said.
If this happens, it wouldn't change the border closure that's in place.
Canada is just looking to see if families that are going through extremely difficult times can be supported.
"We have taken unprecedented measures at the U.S. border to prevent non-essential travel," Trudeau said.
Because of that, people have been separated from their loved ones.
Some have found creative ways around that though.
A Canadian woman and her American fiance have beenwhile still staying in their respective countries.
More Canadian-American couples have been able to see each other again thanks to.
It extenders from Surrey, B.C. all the way to Blaine, Washington.
As long as people stay in the park, they can roam freely between the Canadian and the American side without having to show their passport.
The border closure was first put into place backfor a 30 day period that has been extended twice now.
