Canada Cancelled “I Voted” Stickers This Year & They May Not Come Back
We need validation!
If you've been to your local polling station to cast your vote for Canada's next prime minister, you may have noticed something was missing. Elections Canada isn't giving out Canadian election stickers to voters after they've slipped their ballot into the box this year and it is not going unnoticed. The internet is filled with people who are disappointed that they didn't walk away from voting proudly wearing an "I Voted" sticker.
We get it, voting is immensely important and everyone loves a little pat on the back for completing an important task, even if it's in sticker form. If you're curious why the little badges of honour have been cancelled in Canada, we've got the scoop. Narcity spoke to Leanne Nyirfa, spokesperson for, to learn about why the stickers are no longer available to Canadian voters.
"First time voting in a federal election and I was under the impression you get a sticker ...thoroughly disappointed, almost not worth it," wrote one disappointed Twitter user.
Another especially unhappy voter tweeted "I basically threw a tantrum after voting today because I didn't get an "I voted" sticker. VALIDATE ME PLZ" and we felt it deep in our hearts.
As it turns out, the stickers weren't around in the Canadian federal election in 2015 either, Nyirfa told us. If you're sure you remember wearing a sticker in recent years, you may be recalling a provincial election instead. As for federal elections in Canada, there were no stickers last election and that's still the case for this election.
According to Nyirfa, there was a reason that the stickers were absent on the October 21, 2019 election day and during the early voting period. "We really needed to focus our operational priorities on implementing the changes and the new requirements under Bill C–76," she said.*
Elections Canada simply didn't have the time or resources to worry about "I Voted" stickers for the federal election. If you're wondering what Bill C–76 is, the Bill is the Election Modernization Act.* Therefore, Elections Canada was tasked with the modernization of a number of its practices.
As for the stickers, there was just too much going on for Elections Canada to worry about handing out stickers for us towith. Naturally, people are bummed about the stickers having vanished.
Though Leanne Nyirfa told Narcity that there is a possibility we may be getting our beloved stickers back in upcoming elections, we just can't be sure.
If you've voted and you're in need of some celebration and validation, here it is: Nice work!
If you haven't voted yet, get out there and do your thing. It's been aover the past couple of months and Canada is finally about to see what happens.
