Women all across Canada are flooding to social media to push back against Cineplex’s recent decision. Cineplex Canada's screening of Unplanned, a controversial anti-abortion film, has resulted in people boycotting the company. The film, which is based on the real-life story of Abby Johnson, a Planned Parenthood clinic director in Texas who became an anti-abortion speaker, will screen in 14 Cineplex theatres in Canada for a week beginning on Friday.

In response to the backlash, Cineplex’s CEO and president, Ellis Jacob, released a statement on Twitter on Monday defending the organization's decision to show the film.

"When I immigrated to Canada back in 1969, one of the things that I loved, and still love, the most about living here was that we didn't shy away from our differences — we embrace them," Jacob, who was born in India, said in the statement.

"In this instance, many of us will have to set aside our own personal beliefs and remember that living in a country that censors’ content, opinions, and points of view, because they are different from our own, is not a country that any of us want to live in".

According to CBC, the film has been slammed by The Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada, who has called the film "a dangerous piece of anti-abortion propaganda" that "could incite fanatics to commit.”

And it’s not just vocal objections. According to a report by CTV, Salmar Theatres in Salmon Arm, B.C., were forced to cancel their planned screening of the film after members of their staff were threatened.

Amongst these objections, #boycottcineplex has also begun trending on Twitter in an attempt to shut down the film:

As of now, Cineplex has not backed off of its decision to show the movie. The film will be shown in several provinces across the country, including Ontario and Alberta.

In the GTA, it will be screened at the following locations: Cineplex Cinemas Yonge-Dundas and VIP in Toronto, Cineplex Cinemas Vaughan, and Cineplex Cinemas Winston Churchill in Oakville.
