The Federal Conservatives Photoshopped Justin Trudeau Into A Campaign Ad And Some Canadians Say It's Racist
Many Canadians are expressing their concern over the new advertisement.
With elections just around the corner, all parties are doing everything they can to make sure they can gain the voters trust over the next few months. This means, that negative ad campaigns have been making their way onto television, radio and online. However, Canadians are now saying that one ad campaign has gone too far after the Conservatives photoshopped Justin Trudeau into a photo that many believe is racist.
In a tweet that was released by the Conservative Party on June 26, they attempt to target the Liberals by stating that Trudeau will 'phase-out Canada's oil and gas sector', harming the thousands of Canadians who rely on it.
In an attempt to get their point across, the Conservative Party released a photo with Justin Trudeau as an oil worker, the caption reading 'Justin Trudeau has made it clear that he wants to phase-out Canada's oil and gas sector'.
However, Twitter users were quick to find that this photo actually wasn't of Justin Trudeau. Instead, the Conservative Party took a Getty image photo of an oil worker and replaced their face with Justin Trudeau. However, in the process of doing so, Twitter users were shocked to discover that they darkened Trudeau's skin tone dramatically before posting.
Since the advertisement has been posted, many Canadians have taken to Twitter to express their opinion on the issue. Some Canadians are even stating that the reason why this advertisement is considered racist is that the party purposely darkened the current Prime Ministers skin tone to make him look more 'coloured', putting a negative and racist message behind the ad.
Even Bob Rae, former NDP Premier of Ontario and also a former Member of Parliament for Toronto Centre and the former interim leader of the Liberal Party of Canada states that this advertisement is 'racism at work' and is the 'equivalent to blackface.'
However, while many Canadians are assuming that Trudeau's skin tone was darkened purposely, this has not been confirmed. Other users are expressing that this darker skin tone may have just been a poor editing job, and say the Conservatives are not trying to push this racist undertone in their newest advertisement campaign.
The federal election is set to be held on Monday, October 21, 2019.
