Environment Canada just released a warning alerting residents of Southern Ontario that a potentially historic ice storm may hit this weekend.

On Saturday, the weather alert issued warning for the Greater Toronto Area and across Southern Ontario. They are also stating that widespread power outages are very possible.

According to their reports, rain is currently transforming into freezing rain as they expected. Experts believe it will persist into the evening and ice pellets may be mixed in at times. The conditions will persist until it changes into rain on Sunday afternoon.

The significant rainfall may create localized flooding.

They expect an ice buildup of 10-20 millimetres is likely in the Toronto area by late Sunday. Areas outside of the GTA could see higher amounts up to 31 mm.

Strong winds with gusts up to 85 km/h is expected in some areas as well, which means that power outages and fallen debris are likely.
