Built only a few years ago, the Halifax Public Library has quickly become a fixture of the downtown community. Free classes gather there for sessions, community groups meet in the boardrooms and residents of the city browse the stacks for new finds in this stunning feat of modern architecture. Cleverly designed to look like a stack of books, Schmidt Hammer Larsen’s 156,000 square foot glass masterpiece did not go unnoticed. Not only are it's halls crowded with visitors, but American tech publication Wired.com named the Halifax Public Library as the ninth most beautiful libraries on earth yesterday, on the same list as The Lawrence Public Library in Kansas, and the Yangzhou Zhangshuge bookstore in Zhen Yuan, China. So we’re in some pretty good company. Congratulations to everyone who makes this beautiful space accessible to Haligonians every day! Pretty awesome that our library is now officially world class.
