IKEA Is Launching A New Vegetarian Hot Dog In Canada Today
Say hello to IKEA's brand new plant-based hot dog!
Exciting news, vegetarians! IKEA now has a vegetarian version of their iconic 75-cent hot dogs. The new plant-based dog is the latest item added to the home store's super cheap food menu.
This is the second vegetarian alternative on IKEA's menu. They launched vegetarian meatballs in 2015. While the meatballs are made of chickpeas, the brand new veggie hot dogs are made with kale, red lentils, carrots, ginger, quinoa, onion, potatoes and spices. They are also served with mustard, cabbage, and onion on top.
As a Swedish company, IKEA started by testing the plant-based hot dogs in Europe, where it was a huge success. In the first month of selling them, a single location managed to break records, selling over one million veggie dogs that month alone.
IKEA will still be selling it's regular hotdogs as well, which are one of the company's most popular menu items. Around the world, they sell well over 100 million hot dogs every year. In Canada in 2017 alone, around 3.4 million hot dogs were sold.
Given the hot dog's success, the move makes perfect sense as a way to serve more customers, but that's not the only motivation behind the new menu item. The veggie dogs are also a part of the company's efforts to reduce their environmental impact. Producing the new vegetarian dogs lowers IKEA's carbon footprint by 7 times, according to a company representative.
IKEA is also currently looking at adding more vegetarian and plant-based items to their menu, including a vegan ice cream cone, a dairy-free alternative to their iconic 99 cent cones. They are hoping to add more vegetarian items to their menu later this year and in 2019.
But, as of right now, the brand new veggie hot dog is officially available at all IKEA Bistro locations across Canada!
