In honor of Canadian Thanksgiving on Monday, New Democratic Party leader, Jagmeet Singh, took to Twitter to showcase one of his favourite dishes, a cross-cultural meal he referred to as ‘Punjabi Poutine.’ By Tuesday, the party leader had shared the recipe for his unique Thanksgiving dish, but it had mixed responses from some of his followers. Singh first took to social media to share the idea behind "Punjabi Poutine" on Monday, explaining to his 212,000 Twitter followers that the dish is like “Punjabi and Quebec styles merging.” The party leader noted that the dish is one of his favourite meals to cook when his family gets together, as he wished his Twitter followers a Happy Thanksgiving. By Monday evening, Singh revealed that he’d had lots of interest in his "Punjabi Poutine" dish, and had decided to share his own recipe with the rest of Canada. Posting a handwritten note with all of the required ingredients, Singh wrote, “Cube sweet potatoes & stir fry in coconut oil. For the gravy, sauté onions, then add the rest of the veggies & season to taste. When sweet potatoes are about ready - add in cheese curds and pour on the gravy!” While most of Singh’s followers really enjoyed the "cooking with Jagmeet" segment on his Twitter account, others were unsure whether or not his unique dish actually qualified as poutine at all. Thanksgiving is a time for family, good food & one more day of early voting. So I figured this is a good time to showcase one of my favourite meals to cook when the fam gets together.Punjabi Poutine! It's like Punjabi & Quebec styles merging 🤯Happy Thanksgiving! pic.twitter.com/RfyGxV9wUz— Jagmeet Singh (@theJagmeetSingh) October 14, 2019 In response to Singh’s take on traditional poutine, one Canadian Twitter user said, “As a cook, I have to say not bad knife skills Jagmeet!” Another had a similar opinion, responding to the NDP leader to say, “This sounds delicious! I love being Canadian for our mix up of food.” One of Singh’s followers replied to say, “While Scheer and Trudeau hit each other with smear campaigns, Singh is filling my feed with wholesome posts like this.” As a cook I have to say not bad knife skills Jagmeet!!— Mamma (@Mamma93169031) October 15, 2019 This sounds delicious! I love being Canadian for our mixed up of food. 😋❤— Munkeygutz (@Munkeygutz) October 15, 2019 Honestly though. Thank you for sharing.— Bubbles Malloy (@4BB9) October 14, 2019 Look at those knife skills!! Was that a body-double?— Ich 🇨🇦 (@westcoastich) October 15, 2019 While many people responded to Singh to praise his poutine mash-up, not everyone was impressed with the changes he’d made to the original poutine recipe. One Twitter user replied to the NDP leader to say, “Can’t be poutine without fries, sorry.” Another Canadian was also unsure about the new take on traditional poutine, adding, “Almost too healthy to taste as good as real poutine.” I'm in it. Trying new things is bomb and sweet potatoes kick ass!— Joy Thompson (@IAmJoyThompson) October 15, 2019 Can’t be poutine without fries, sorry.— Robert Davis (@iRobertDavis) October 15, 2019 Almost too healthy to taste as good as real poutine.— randomcommenting (@thoughtofftoday) October 14, 2019 Earlier today, Singh followed up his popular poutine video by going on another food quest. Singh posed for photos with Uncle Tetsu in Toronto, who's famous for his popular fluffy Japanese-style cheesecakes. Uncle Tetsu's Japanese Cheesecake stores are located throughout the country serving up delicious desserts for customers everywhere. It continues to be a successful few weeks for the NDP leader on social media after he was widely praised on Twitter for his hilarious one-liners during the federal leaders’ debates, and after he successfully managed to slide into Rihanna’s Instagram DMs. With the federal election now less than one week away, it remains to be seen how Singh’s recent social media impact will translate into votes on Monday.
