The MMIWG report was formally released today. Several years in the making, it is the final report from the missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls inquiry. It was presented to the federal government today during a cerimony in Quebec. In several instances, the report describes the treatment of the missing and murdered Indigenous women as genocide. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has spoken up on the final inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women in Canada.

The report has numerous recommendations aimed at Canadian officials. Throughout the MMIWG report, the word genocide is used several times to describe the violence and deaths. "The report highlights that the thousands of truths shared before the National Inquiry reinforce the existence of acts of genocide against Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA people," says the report in the introduction.

"The violence the National Inquiry heard about amounts to a race-based genocide of Indigenous Peoples, including First Nations, Inuit and Métis, which especially targets women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA people."

Justin Trudeau addressed the report today to a crowd during a ceremony of its formal release.

"We will conduct a thorough review of this report, and we will develop and implement a national action plan to address violence against Indigenous women, girls, and LGBTQ and two-spirit people," said Trudeau to the crowd during the formal release of the report, CTV News reports.

"We have heard of their human rights being consistently and systemically violated," said Trudeau. "It is shameful. It is absolutely unacceptable. And it must end."

The report calls for Canadians to take action and offers several recommendations for various levels of governments, the police and also the general public. There are over 200 "calls for justice" in the report.
