Social media is a double-edged sword and it tipped off officials to a potentially dangerous situation in B.C recently. According to sources, Kamloops Christian School was threatened on Snapchat after a male youth posted a photo of two guns. The youth has since been identified and measures are being taken. Thankfully, everyone was safe and there was no immediate danger and the school was closed on Thursday, September 19, 2019.

According to the Kamloops RCMP, officials have arrested an unidentified male youth after he posted a threatening image on social media. While sources have not been able to obtain the image, CBC News has stated that the photo, which was uploaded to Snapchat, featured an unnamed person holding two pistols.

Interpol, the intentional criminal police organization, originally tipped off RCMP about the social media post. As a result, the school closed to students on September 19.

The Snapchat was allegedly accompanied by a threatening caption towards Kamloops Christian School. The exact message has not been released to the public.

Police and other officials were quick to respond and they later found who was responsible. According to Kamloops RCMP, the individual has since been arrested.

Narcity spoke with Victor Steinhammer, Staff Sargent with the Kamloops RCMP. Steinhammer stated that only one male youth has been identified and arrested.

He also stated that he does not know if the child will be suspended or expelled as that is now in the hands of the school. Narcity has reached out to Interpol and the school for comment and will update this story.

Staff Sergeant Mat Van Laer told CBC News that he was confident that officials found the author of the threat. The male youth was taken into custody and it was determined that there is no risk to the school or the students.

Due to the male's age, not much information is being released by officers. Van Laer did tell CBC News that the youth was facing “serious consequences” as a result of his actions; although they have not been made clear.

Van Laer has stated that threats like this are taken seriously and they are demanding on police resources.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time a school has been threatened through social media this year.

Just four months ago, two schools in B.C. received shooting threats that were posted to Facebook. Following an intense investigation, RCMP located the suspect in connection with the threats.

Thankfully, there was no danger in either of these situations but it does not make the situation any less concerning.

Just three days ago, an investigation was conducted at the University of Calgary after an individual was spotted on campus with what appeared to be a rifle.

While U of C students were vocal about their anger over not receiving info and emergency notifications about the incident, police later found the rifle to be a paper mache replica.

Schools along western Canada have been making headlines several times this year for violence.

Earlier this year, a Surrey, B.C. student was filmed being assaulted by numerous boys. In the video posted online, you can see a group of teenage boys confronting another student in the woods. The boys then made the victim get on his knees and kiss the feet of another student.
