Montreal's Bat-Signal Lasted Only A Few Minutes Before It Was Foiled By Police
There was an incident in the area which caused the shortfall.
Montreal was to be one of 13 cities to shine the Bat-Signal in celebration of Batman's 80th anniversary, and the only Canadian city to do so. The Bat-Signal was set to be projected on an office building in Place Dupuis on Saturday night, September 21 from 8 p.m. until midnight, but it was only up for a few minutes. Unfortunately, the celebrations were cut off due to a police operation in the area, which halted the bat-signal projection.
It turns out that a man had climbed a statue in the park at Place Émilie-Gamelin, right by where the projection was. The man refused to come down from the statue, causing police to infiltrate the area and disrupt traffic, as well as shut down the Bat-Signal, CBC News reports. The man, who the article says has mental health issues, has reportedly been charged with mischief.
Montreal was excitedly anticipating being the only Canadian city to have the honour of celebrating the Caped Crusader on Batman Day. Other cities included were Barcelona, Mexico City, Los Angeles, Berlin, Melbourne, Tokyo, New York, and São Paulo, to name a few.
Bystanders seemed to be confused and annoyed at the situation. The disappointment must have been real, after all the planning and hype.
"The Bat-Signal is easily one of the most recognizable images among all superhero iconography and this is going to be a remarkable sight as we transcend borders, languages and cultures to bring us all together with this single experience," said Pam Lifford, president of Warner Bros. Global Brands and Experiences, in a press release.
This isn't the first time police have intercepted Batman.? That incident was a fan moment, though, after police admitted they . Vancouver police have , too. It seems like Batman can't catch a break in Canada.
This time in Montreal, it was still nothing personal. It seems that police just wanted to get the man off the statue safely. It is still unclear why the Bat-Signal had to be removed to get him down, but the police have reasons that we can't always argue with.
