As all six of Canada’s main political party leaders gathered in Gatineau on Monday night for the official English-language federal leaders’ debate, tensions were as high as they have ever been. Kicking-off at 7 p.m. eastern time, it didn’t take long for the party leaders to start seriously gunning for one another. However, there was one leader whose burns were just next-level shade, and Canadians were absolutely loving it.

Last month, New Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh met with Green Party leader Elizabeth May and Conservative leader Andrew Scheer, to take part in the Maclean’s/Citytv national leaders debate. With Justin Trudeau noticeably absent, it was Singh’s devastating shade-throwing that stole the show, with Canadians taking to social media in their thousands to share their appreciation for Singh’s wit.

On Monday night, Singh found himself pretty popular on social media once again, as his ruthless remarks and hilarious comments at the second English leaders debate went down a storm with Canadians online.

Bringing the banter from the get-go, Singh took aim at most of the opposition party leaders, delivering consistent devastating blows to anyone who tried to argue with him.

Singh started off his night of burns pretty early on, taking aim in particular at Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Conservative leader Andrew Scheer. In between their own disagreement with one another, Singh remarked, “What we have here is Mr. Scheer and Mr. Trudeau debating about who is worse for Canada.” Ouch!

It turned out that Canadians were big fans of Singh's shade, taking to Twitter to share their appreciation. One Twitter user wrote, "Singh is literally throwing shade all over the place."

Another added, "Singh is killing this #Debatenight with the amount of shade he throws at everyone!"

A short while later, during another disagreement between Andrew Scheer and Justin Trudeau regarding the climate crisis, Singh said, "You do not have to decide between Mr. Delay or Mr. Deny," pointing to them.

Once again, this shade was incredibly popular with Canadians on social media, who were quick to applaud the NDP leader for his quick-wit. One Twitter user said, "Jagmeet Singh, mic drop on climate."

Another Canadian added, "OK the 'Mr Delay vs Mr Deny' line was hilarious from Singh. He's killing it tonight."

Singh was also applauded for his insightful comments during the pro-life/pro-choice debate, as he noted, “A man has no place in a discussion of a woman's right to choose."

This remark was received extremely well by Canadians online, with one Twitter user posting, “You’re slaying this debate king!"

Singh will be hoping that his witty humour and popular shade-throwing will pick up some extra voters before Canada heads to the polls later this month on October 21.
