The school will be completed by 2021.
Climate change and carbon emission have been two major talking points in Canada recently. With the new Carbon Tax, it's clear that the Federal government is working towards a greener Canada. One high school in Ontario is now doing the same. John Paul II Catholic Secondary School will be the first school in Canada to become carbon neutral.
In a press release by the London District Catholic School Board they state that the project will be working on completely transforming the high school in London, Ontario to a much greener and environmentally friendly infrastructure. The $9.7 million project is expected to be completed in 2021 and will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by removing around 275 tonnes of Carbon annually.
In order to complete this project, the high school will be partnering with Natural Resources Canada and Ameresco to install a variety of tools that are needed to help make the high school completely carbon neutral. Some of the new changes will include 2,300 solar panels that provide covered parking spaces for students and teachers, which will not only collect solar energy but also keep cars shaded throughout the day.
The project will also include 50,000 feet of drilled piping for a geothermal heating and cooling system as well as 2 electrical vehicle charging stations.
CBC News states that the federal government has announced that it would be investing $4.8 million into the project and the school will be paying for the rest of the renovations through installments over the next 20 years.
CBC reports that the idea for the project came after the 25-year-old school was up for some renovations to replace some old equipment. While considering their replacements, the staff of the school came to the conclusion that it would be beneficial to replace equipment with new and green technology.
This pilot project is being completed in the hopes that it will encourage other schools around Ontario to make the same renovations. The London School board is already considering making these changes to other schools within their district.
Along with these changes, the school board will also be introducing a new curriculum to teach their students about the new technology and climate change.
