Several Ontario Universities Are Now Cancelling Classes Due To COVID-19
Online classes are still running.
Since the World Health Organization has officially declared the coronavirus a pandemic on Wednesday, many institutions continue to close their doors as a precaution. Recently, multiple Ontario universities have announced that they will be cancelling classes across their campuses. However, many will remain open.
EARLIER: Durham College took to social media on Thursday night to announce they would be shutting down operations.
Western University, Ontario Tech University, and Laurentian University all made similar moves announcing cancellations while moving some classes online.
"In response, classes will be cancelled at the Durham College Oshawa and Whitby campuses and the Pickering Learning Site on Friday, March 13 and Monday, March 16. Online classes are not impacted and continue as scheduled. Students are expected to attend their placements unless other arrangements have been made with their employer," read a statement from Durham College.
"While classes are cancelled, the campus remains open. During this time, staff are expected to work as usual, and faculty are to be on campus per their regular schedules. Please contact your school office if you have any questions," it added.
Alan Shepard, President, and Vice-Chancellor of Western University announced that classes would be cancelled from March 13 to March 17 before classes would be moved online for the rest of the semester.
Ontario Tech also announced that all classes will be cancelled starting March 13 as they start to make the transition to online classes.
Other universities, such as thehave announced that it is likely that they will also see closures due to the virus in the future, yet these campuses still remain open as of Friday morning.
However, it's not just post-secondary institutions that are being affected.
Ford's government also decidedto shut down all publicly funded schools in the province for two weeks after March Break, due to COVID-19 concerns.
The sprawling Ontario school closure will be in effect from March 14 to April 5, 2020.
Ontario school boards had previously cancelled several fieldas a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
Most of the trips were scheduled to take place over March Break.
