Ontario’s police watchdog has become involved in an incident after a 23-year-old died in Ottawa.

While details are yet to be confirmed, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has said that a man was killed on Wednesday after falling from an apartment in the city.

Ottawa Police reported that a police investigation had occurred at the 2000 block of Jasmine Crescent, but provided no additional details.

"SIU has invoked its mandate in relation to a police investigation in the 2000 block of Jasmine Cr. Any further information will come from SIU," Ottawa Police explained.

The SIU added that more information would follow “later.”

Per their own definition, the SIU is “a civilian law enforcement agency.”

The unit’s job is to “investigate incidents involving police officers where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.”
