Amazon Just Secretly Shut Down One Of Its Canadian Offices
They hid the bad news with the opening of a new warehouse.
Amazon just made headlines for breaking ground on the construction of a brand new warehouse and fulfilment centre in Ottawa that willto the city.
But while that was going on, the company used the opportunity to quietly shut down one of their software development offices in the same city.
Just two years after opening the office, which provided at least 30 high paying jobs to local tech talent, Amazon shut it down saying they would be focusing on other areas and moving the work that was done there to different offices in Canada and the US.
Amazon told the Ottawa Citizen that they would work with the employees of the shutdown office to relocate them or help them transition into other work outside of the company.
Meanwhile, ground was breaking on Amazon's newest warehouse on the other side of the city, where Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ottawa's mayor, Jim Watson were both on hand to mark to occasion.
As an industry expert told the Citizen, it probably isn't a coincidence that Amazon waited until there was a huge bit of good news to quietly announce the bad news of closing their office.
The office, located in Ottawa's Kanata neighbourhood, will officially be shut down sometime this fall.
