After the total number of cases surpassed 150,000 over the weekend, the country’s top doctor has shared a new message about COVID-19 in Canada.

In a statement shared on September 27, Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam confirmed that the total number of positive tests in Canada had reached 151,671.

She explained that as of Friday, an average of 1,175 new diagnoses were being confirmed in Canada every day.

We have a chance to prevent a further escalation of the epidemic if we all act together now.

As part of her statement, Dr. Tam stressed the importance of remaining “vigilant” as cases and hospitalizations continue to climb.

She explained that these surges can “quickly overwhelm public health and healthcare system resources” and will increase the likelihood of spreading.

She reiterated the importance of taking “every measure during every moment of our day,” including hand washing, physical distancing and keeping social bubbles small.

Explaining that local health authorities cannot stop COVID-19 alone, the top doctor said, “We have a chance to prevent a further escalation of the epidemic if we all act together now.”

Her comments come as cases of the illness continue to surge in regions like Ontario and Quebec.

Of the 150,000-plus new cases, almost half are located in just one province.
