This morning a moose was spotted on highway 417 near Ottawa, slowing down traffic for quite some time during the normal morning commute for people going to work.

Plenty of social media users took the slowdown as an opportunity to take a photo or video of the moose.

Well, unfortunately, what started out as a fun Canadian story has a very sad ending.

The crews who arrived to handle the situation, had the animal euthanized.

Some of the images and videos posted on social media appeared to show that the moose was suffering from an injury to one of its front legs.

A spokesperson for Ontario’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) said that the decision to put the moose down was a hard one to make.

“It’s not a decision we take lightly,” said spokesperson Jolanta Kowalski.

A vet was consulted before the decision to euthanize was made, said Kowalski.

It was deemed that tranquilizing the moose would have created a greater danger to public safety, as the animal could have become disoriented and run into traffic as a result.

The moose’s remains are being donated to members of a local Indigenous community so that none of its body will be wasted, says the MNRF.

As you can imagine there are quite a few upset people at the news that the moose that entertained people this morning is now dead.

Rest in peace highway moose.
