Parks Canada Is Unveiling A Brand New Section To This Popular Montreal Trail

Parks Canada has announced their plans to extend and improve Montreal's Lachine Canal, a project that will cost a total of $6 million. The pathway will be extended east of Atwater Avenue by 1 kilometre. Rest stops, washrooms and visitor infrastructure will be built along the Canal as well.

The Lachine Canal is one of the busiest and most popular trails in all of Canada, used by visitors and Montreal residents alike. The Canal extends for 14.5 kilometres,  from the Old Port of Montreal to Lake Saint-Louis. It's the perfect place for a scenic walk or cycling trip through the city

Crews are already hard at work near Atwater Avenue and Des Seigneurs Street, laying the foundation for the extended path and preparing the sites that will be transformed into newly renovated facilities for visitors.

The project will improve the flow of traffic through one of the busiest areas of the Canal. It is slated to be fully complete and ready for use by the end of summer 2019.

The Canal was built in 1825, and is officially recognized as a Parks Canada National Historic Site. It is at the top of the priority list for expansion and improvements over the next several years.

Parks Canada is reportedly investing a record $3 billion over the next five years to improve facilities and infrastructure within Canada's historic sites, national parks and marine conservation sites.
