In a statement on Thursday, police in New Brunswick confirmed that a 26-year-old woman had died after an altercation with police in Edmundston. Police say she was holding a knife and was shot by an officer. An investigation is ongoing.

On June 4, Edmundston Police Force issued a news release that confirmed a woman had died in the early hours of the morning following an incident on Canada Road.

According to their statement, officers were called to the scene at around 2:30 a.m., to check on a woman's wellbeing at an apartment building.

“The responding police officer was confronted at the scene by a woman holding a knife who made threats,” reads the release.

An Edmundston Police Force officer then discharged a firearm, the notice confirms.

While efforts to revive her were made, she was pronounced dead at the scene, the police report says.

As of June 4, an autopsy has been scheduled, and an investigation into her death is ongoing.

Local police are expected to speak further about the incident on Thursday afternoon.

“The Edmundston Police Force has requested the services of an independent agency to conduct a review of the incident to ensure police actions were appropriate and conform to policing standards,” the news release notes.

"As a matter of accountability and transparency for the independent review, the New Brunswick RCMP is providing investigative and forensic support," it adds.

While the woman was currently living in Edmundston, New Brunswick, she is described as being a British Columbia native.

No additional information about her has been revealed at this time.

Edmunston is located in the northwestern part of New Brunswick, just kilometres from the Quebec and U.S. borders.

The population is believed to be around 17,000.

Earlier this week, a video emerged from Nunavut appearing to show an RCMP officer knocking down a suspect with a police vehicle. This incident is also being investigated at this time.
