Having an adorable mascot for your local football team seems like a given. Yet, one Canadian football team has made a mascot change for the worse, according to their fans. Saskatchewan Roughriders' new mascot has football fans terrified, and many are demanding to bring the old mascot back. The CFL team, Saskatchewan Roughriders announced on Twitter earlier this week that they had been training their favourite gopher mascot, Gainer for the new season. The video that they posted on Twitter on July 1 shows the old mascot that fans had grown to love, hitting the gym before transforming into the newer and seemingly less appreciated version of himself. While members of the Saskatchewan Roughriders seemed excited for the new look that Gainer was bringing to the team, which included a slimmer appearance, new shoes, and green eyes, fans instantly hated the look. The new piercing green eyes that Gainer had is what seemed to turn fans off the most about this new look. Many fans claim that the eyes will even haunt their dreams. The former premier of Saskatchewan, Brad Wall even took to Twitter to compare Gainer's new vivid green eyes to a horror novel work by Stephen King, Pet Sematary. Since then, fans have been sharing how terrifying the new Gainer looks, and are asking the team to bring back the original mascot that everybody has grown to love. The new guy looks more like a chipmunk than a gopher. Why not let us keep the REAL Gainer and just rename the other one; maybe he could make guest appearances or something. I dunno. Our Gainer has panache❤️ the new guy just seems buzzed @sskroughriders pic.twitter.com/NzodvoiDP1— Melissa (@MizMama19) July 4, 2019 .@BitterGainer Working theory: beloved Gainer tragically died and ..... pic.twitter.com/07Tm75TNjE— Brad Wall (@BradWall306) July 2, 2019 His new face will haunt my dreams for awhile.— Brandon T Eashappie (@brandoneashappi) July 2, 2019 That is the worst transformation of any mascot ever! Creepy evil eyes, big ugly runners, and he’s lost his butt! And all his funny personality went with it. Please go back to our beloved Gainer, this change is a huge mistake.— Susan T. The page reads, "Someone has replaced Gainer with an imposter. Rider Nation wants the real Gainer back." As of 11:30 AM on Thursday, the petition had already gained over 4,000 signatures and counting. One petition signer even claimed that the new Gainer is terrifying children, "My kids absolutely love Gainer, but this new Gainer is scaring the crap out of them. That's all I need for my kids, more nightmares." In a Twitter post, the Saskatchewan Roughriders posted a series of photos of Gainer, each one zooming closer into his eyes, poking fun at the negative comments they had been getting about the change.
