When someone else wins big in life it can be hard not to feel jealous. However, this latest lottery win is too wholesome not to warm your heart. A St. Thomas couple won $26 Million in the lottery recently and they are planning to celebrate it with all their grandchildren.\nThe winners, who claimed their prize from OLG on Thursday have been identified as Gerry and Helen Phillips from St. Thomas, Ontario. The pair are grandparents of seven and say they actually discovered they had won while out for breakfast with some of their grandchildren.\nGerry told OLG that he "decided to take a couple of the grandchildren out for breakfast." He continues saying, "I passed an OLG ticket checker, which reminded me that I had a ticket in my pocket. When I saw [all the] numbers on the ticket checker, my brain did not register it was $26 million – I thought it was $260,000.”\nMeanwhile, Helen, who works as a nurse had finished an overnight shift and was sleeping when Gerry double checked the ticket on the OLG app. Again, when it confirmed they had won he says, "I had to wake up Helen to show her what was on the tablet screen. It was flashing ‘Congratulations $26 million winner.’ We woohoo’ed a few times!"\nOLG Handout\nNow the grandparents turned multimillionaires have some big decisions ahead of them. While OLG reports that the couple has brought on a team of advisors to help them manage this large sum of money they already have a few ideas of what they are going to do with it.\nFor starters, Helen, who has been in nursing for 46 years is going to join Gerry, a former electronic technician, in retirement. They also plan to take a vacation, either heading out west or maybe even a cruise.\nHelen also told OLG that their family will enjoy the big win too. She said, "Our three children and seven grandchildren will share in this good fortune. But we are taking the next three to six months to carefully consider what exactly to do with the money.”\nThe most ironic part of this story, however, is the fact that Gerry almost passed on buying the ticket. He told OLG that he had won two free plays on another ticket and went to cash it in for the upcoming draw. However, he said," I paused for a moment when I saw the jackpot was only $26 million. I was hoping it was $50 million, but I then decided to get the ticket. Thank goodness I didn’t keep walking!”\nWhatever compelled Gerry to buy the ticket, we definitely need some of that in our lives! Nonetheless, it is a happy ending and you can bet the Phillips grandchildren are about to be lovingly spoiled!
