Sunwing Fined $694,500 By Canadian Government For Flight Delays, Losing Baggages And More

Many Sunwing passengers encountered several delays and issues last year, and as a result, the Canadian Transportation Agency has taken action. Sunwing was fined $694,500 by the Canadian Transportation Agency for flight delays, losing baggage and more. The penalty was announced in a news release on April 8.
The fine comes after Sunwing passengers encountered service issues last year during a four day period in April 2018 on flights to or from the Toronto Pearson airport or Montréal Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport, says the CTA.
According to CBC News, during that time, there was an ice storm in Toronto and Sunwing was also experiencing staffing problems. This led to several issues for their passengers, such as being stuck for several hours waiting onboard a plane that was already on the tarmac, missing baggage, flight delays and flight cancellations.
The news release from the CTA says they "found that Sunwing did not properly apply its scheduled international tariff rules in respect of:
- flight delays, including the provision of hotel and meal vouchers to passengers;
- communication, including communication on flight status and information about delayed or lost baggage; and
- tarmac delays".
Now, as a result of this, the company has been fined $695,400, which they have to pay by May 10, 2019.
On top of the fine, the airline will also have to compensate their customers. "Sunwing must compensate passengers for out-of-pocket expenses incurred as a consequence of its failure to properly apply the terms and conditions set out in its Scheduled International Tariff no later than June 28, 2019," reads the news release.
"As the Montreal Convention applies to all of its international flights, Sunwing must also compensate passengers for reasonable expenses incurred as a result of flight delays experienced by passengers or loss, damage or delay to passengers' baggage."
