Students at Simon Fraser University and other Vancouver locals have been left confused and concerned after an incident occurred during class last week. The lack of news coverage on the situation and action from the university resulted in one student taking it upon herself to share the story a week later and it's sparked a divided discussion, to say the least. Apparently, a student in the classroom who people are claiming is mentally unwell had been set off and began to attack another student in the class. From there the professor, Orion, in Ashley's class went to the lecture hall next door to see what was wrong. After Orion went to the classroom to help get the student out of the classroom, he instructed Ashley's class to lock the doors to their lecture hall- it was then that they realized there were no locks on the door. As a result, the student made his way into their classroom and began to throw a table as well as chairs at students in the class. While the majority of the class was able to escape the room, the girls who had been struck by the chairs were stuck. @simonfraseruembedded via Finally, police showed up shortly after to remove the student from campus. At that point, one of the injured girls had to leave class for the rest of the day as she had suffered a concussion. Since then the university has remained extremely silent over the situation according to Ashley to the point where she believes "it's like they are trying to pretend it never happened." Only the class professor, Orion, has taken action by requesting a counsellor but instead of that, Ashley claims all they got was "a psychologist along with a security officer [who] basically told us the situation wasn't that bad and we were all overreacting. They made us feel small and insignificant." @simonfraseruembedded via Below Ashley's post, one of the victims of the attack, Dawn Horyee, commented on the post mentioning the events that transpired have left her with "serious mental and physical injuries." She also mentioned that she is still waiting for information from the RCMP as well as SFU, but that information on the situation that has reached the media stream has been severely lowballed: Facebook users are quite divided on the situation as to who is at fault, the school or the attacker. As well as whether there should be locks on the doors in schools considering the lack of a lock on the lecture hall doors did play a role in the escalation of the situation. Though many users have mentioned the lack of locks helps in other cases of emergency to ensure students don't get trapped inside a classroom during a fire or get locked in with an attacker. Since then the conversation has now moved over to Reddit where users have pointed out other mistakes on the university's end: Via Reddit Via Reddit While the university still has yet to respond, it's expected that something will be coming in the near future considering Ashley's story is beginning to gain traction on both Facebook and Reddit. With the situation far from resolved, it definitely does pose a concerning debate regarding student safety and whether classrooms are equipped for situations like the one at SFU. As well as if SFU is even responding to this situation properly.
