In a truly unusual case, four Ontario men from the same family have now been indicted on charges of sexual assault. Details of the crimes, which reportedly took place over nearly two decades, are still limited.

But according to the Ontario Provincial Police, the related men face a total of 19 charges between them. The oldest man, 67, stands accused of 12 of those counts.

According to the Russell County OPP Crime Unit, the men were brought in by police in connection to numerous sexual assaults which occurred between 1974 and 1991, reports the Ottawa Citizen.

Many of the men, whose identities are currently being protected, were minors during the time of their crimes. The accused have all be charged under the laws that existed during the period when the crimes were committed.

It is uncertain at this time whether police will be releasing the identities of the men, but given the nature of their crimes, it is likely that if convicted some will face jail time.

In the Canadian legal system the maximum prison sentence for sexual assault, if aggravated. is life in prison.  Although it is uncertain if any of the accused charges holds such weight, an individual convicted of sexual assault of any degree is likely to face serious consequences.
