For at least the fourth day in a row, Toronto's extreme cold is wreaking havoc on the city and it's really in your best interest not to leave your house today. Not only are the temperatures themselves terrible - it currently feels like -33°C out there - but the weather is having a major impact on anyone trying to get around the city. On top of that, these temperatures are considered a health hazard. Given the frighteningly low temperatures, Environment Canada still has an extreme cold warning in place for Toronto and most of Southern Ontario. In their warning, they highlight the dangers of the cold saying that in these temperatures frostbite can develop in minutes. The greatest risks of cold-related symptoms are for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter. Even if you don't fall in one of those categories, today is still a terrible day to try to get around Toronto. Another reason for that is black ice that is coating some roads and highways. While they didn't provide an exact number the OPP confirmed this morning that because of the ice there have been crashes all over the GTA. Then, on top of all that, there's the TTC, which Torontonians already know doesn't fare very well when it's cold outside. Yet again this morning riders were met with crazy delays throughout the TTC system. For instance, Line 3 of the subway is still completely shut down and Line 1 and 2 have both been experience major, on-going delays due to signal issues, which are caused by the cold. While people aren't surprised by the delays anymore, they are still expressing their feelings about it on Twitter. The #ttc is in shambles! I spend almost $400 a month to use the @GOtransit & TTC. But if the service is not operating as it should, what I pay doesn’t change.
