Gigantic Moths That Are The Size Of Birds Keep Being Spotted Around Ontario (VIDEOS)
They look just like a hummingbird.
It's time to hide your clothes! Multiple gigantic hummingbird moths in Ontario have been spotted this year. The large insects get their name for often being the same size as a small bird.
Since the beginning of the summer, multiple videos and photos have been posted online that showcase these terrifying creatures flying throughout the province.
While the insects aren't harmful, they're still a scary sight.
In a recent video that was posted by The Weather Network, one of these creatures was spotted hovering over a potted flower in Mississauga, Ontario.
Poster Marta Czurylowicz stated that she first thought the flying creature was a hummingbird. However, after getting a closer look she noticed that it was a huge moth.
According to Stephen Marshall, a professor at the University of Guelph, these insects are also known as sphinx moths and "are broad-bodied moths with very long front wings. They have a very characteristic shape.”
“Within flight they do look remarkably like ruby-throated hummingbirds, but in fact, they're an aptly-named sphinx moth called the hummingbird clearwing moth.”
While most sphinx moths are spotted at night, the species that Czurylowicz captured on video is a daytime creature.
However, this isn't the first time that these insects have been seen across Ontario.
Back in May, The Weather Network posted another video of one of thesein Elliot Lake.
"Have you ever seen a moth like this?" read the caption.
Multiple Twitter users have also shared theirover the past few months.
"The highlight of our nature hike yesterday in @RougePark in #Ontario was coming upon a Snowberry Hummingbird Moth. This type of moth is very active during the day," wrote one user.
However, this isn't thethat's been seen in Ontario this summer.
have also been captured on camera, and they look way more adorable than their hummingbird siblings.
