We reported last month that 24 public colleges have voted in favour of a strike mandate, if contract renewal discussions failed to result in a new agreement for those employed with the college.

Well Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) - the union representing the faculty at Ontario's 24 public colleges is not waiting around any longer and has set their strike deadline to October 16th, 12:01 A.M.

The issue at hand is the lack of secure employment offered by Ontario colleges, which heavily utilize contact teaching staff - faculty members who are paid less and have zero job security in comparison to full-time permanent staff members.  Also the inability for said faculty members to have a voice in the decision making process for their schools.

The strike date was set after the College Employer Council allegedly walked away from the bargaining table and refused to consider the key issues being discussed on representation from students and staff on school related issues and changes.

J.P. Hornick, the chairman of the OPSEU bargaining team, says that the College Employer Council "is not moving forward on the issues faculty care about most -- even in the case of no-cost items like academic freedom or longer contracts for contract faculty"

If the strike does happen, 220,000 students across Ontario will be affected.
