Ontarians don’t let summer long weekends go to waste. Whether they’re hitting up festivals with their friends or heading up to the cottage with their families, Canadians always find a way to soak up every last bit of summer. However, those hoping to ring in the weekend with a few pyrotechnics this year could be out of luck, thanks to a new Ontario fireworks ban.

According to The Weather Network, forest fire ratings have been extremely high. The town of Gravenhurst reported earlier this week that an “extreme” forest firer danger rating had placed a strict fire ban on the Muskoka region. The immediate danger initially resulted in the cancellation of a scheduled fireworks display at the Muskoka Wharf on Saturday.

Thankfully, the severity of the alert has been dropped. The risk is currently set at “high” with fireworks expected to proceed, but we're not out of the woods yet.

Despite the decreased fire risk, people are still being reminded that daytime burning is prohibited. There is still a good chance that the risk could shoot back up, due to the extreme heat that is expected to hit the province this weekend.

It may get so hot that all fire-related activities will have to be cancelled. Which is a bummer, but better safe than sorry.

Fires aren’t the only thing Ontarians are being warned about ahead of the long weekend. The Ontario Provincial Police unveiled its Slow Down Move Over initiative on Thursday. The initiative hopes to remind drivers who are rushing up to the cottage to take it easy and avoiding putting anyone else’s life at risk.

"This weekend our focus is going to be to remind everyone about the importance of slowing down and moving over," said OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt on Thursday morning. "...We want to make sure that drivers are driving safely and responsibly so that we don't have a tragedy to deal with."
