People Want Free Movement Between Canada, The UK, Australia And New Zealand ASAP
As in, right after Brexit.
Over 180,000 people are ready to see a new union form between Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK.
CANZUK International, an organization that aims to make that union happen, will be submitting proposals to the UK government outlining recommendations for free trade and free movement of their citizens between the countries. Their submissions follow the UK's announcement that it would be withdrawing from the European Union.
The proposals have received significant support, including from senior politicians and diplomats like Tony Abbot (the former Australian Prime Minister) Boris Johnson (the Foreign and Commonwealth Secretary), Erin O'Toole (Canadian Conservative leadership candidate), and David Seymour (New Zealand's ACT Party leader).
The proposals regard the following:
- Free mobility rights for the citizens of Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK to live, work and study in each other's countries,
- Amendment of the Trans-Tasman Travel Agreement (a free movement model) between Australia and New Zealand to include Canada and the UK,
- Development of a free trade agreement that would remove customs barriers and limitations to commerce, and
- Cooperation between the countries on issues concerning foreign policy, defence and intelligence (Five Eyes Intelligence Alliance, NATO and the UN Security Council).
