Drivers were met with a jaw-dropping sight on Sunday when a small aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing on the highway.

The four-seater plane landed near Highway 404 and 16th Avenue in Markham, just outside of the small Buttonville Airport.

York Regional Police warned drivers to "expect delays with all the people staring at it." They were right, as the incident led to significant backup.

According to CP24, the plane experienced engine failure as it was taking off from the airport.

Police told the outlet that both the student and flight instructor in the aircraft at the time made it out safely.

A similar incident happened in Quebec earlier this year. Dramatic footage of a plane touching down on Highway 40 went viral in April.
