Riding the school bus is an essential part of most kids' daily lives, and new strides are being made to improve its overall safety. The Region of Peel is working to improve road safety for kids by installing stop-arm cameras on Toronto-area school buses. These cameras are meant to penalize anyone who doesn't stop for the children or school bus.\nAt a council meeting that was held on December 12, 2019, a motion was passed to approve the cameras and a representative of the campaign called “Let’s Remember Adam,” delegated in support of the decision.\nThis campaign honours Adam Ranger, a five-year-old who was killed in February 2000 by someone who did not stop for the flashing lights or stop-arm on the school bus.\nThe campaign was started by his family to remember him and to push for stop-arm cameras across Ontario.\n“We are calling on you for support. We don’t want any family to ever have to go through what we went and continue to go through,” a statement on the organization's website reads.\n“On behalf of my family and the Let’s Remember Adam campaign, I am asking you to help spread Adam's safety message to friends, family, politicians, and beyond. Our governments need to hear his message and must act now so stop-arm cameras can be used on all school buses in Ontario,” it added.\nLet's Remember Adam\nAccording to Insauga, the region of Peel will assist the province by developing new regulations with the help of school boards.\nThe new penalty for drivers who fail to stop for a school bus with flashing red lights will be a charge starting at $400 and could result in jail time.\nJerome Cid | Dreamstime\nRepresentatives from the Region of Peel, Brampton, Mississauga, and Caledon will meet up with the OPP, Peel Regional Police, and the regional school bus consortium in April of 2020.\nThe group will make suggestions for the implementation of the stop-arm program to the local council.\nThere are stories everywhere.
