The City of Toronto just announced a brand new pilot project that'll open up a world of opportunity for the film and TV industry. The initiative is called xoTO, and involves enhanced access to 11 pre-approved public schools and city buildings for location filming.

Mayor John Tory made the announcement today: "This new project opens up access to locations that are very desirable to productions filming in the city." Productions will have access to the locations over the summer, and on evenings and weekends throughout the school year.

The xoTO project is also going to benefit students and young people working towards a career in the film and TV industry. "Students will work with industry professionals, providing them with unprecedented on-the-job training," the press release states.

Tons of new co-op and internship placements will be created in categories like production, makeup, hair, sound, special effects, set decoration, costume design, continuity, lighting, grip, construction and transportation.

The xoTO initiative will give production companies from all over the world the chance to their sights on Toronto, joining the countless Hollywood movies and TV shows that were filmed here.

The pilot project will run until June 2019. For the third year in a row, the screen-based production industry has generated $1.5 billion for Toronto's economy, and employs over 30,000 people in the city.
