In a lengthy special meeting on Thursday, August 20, Toronto District School Board revealed it's new target back-to-school date is September 15. That's one week after Ontario's initial planned timeline.

"We are looking at Tuesday, Sept. 15 being the first day that students will enter school," said Executive Supt. Andrew Gold, per CP24.

TDSB to start sending kids back a week late

This would likely be a staggered start, so not all kids and all schools would return on the same day. Provincial Education Minister Stephen Lecce had announced on Tuesday that school boards would be given the freedom to stagger their return dates over two weeks.

Meanwhile, also at Thursday's meeting, TDSB approved mandatory masks for all students regardless of age. Ontario had previously dictated only that students in Grade 4 and above must keep their faces covered.

The board also wants to cut class sizes in neighbourhoods that have been hit hardest by COVID-19. They approved additional spending on Thursday that will, in theory, allow for reduced numbers.
