A Toronto daycare has been forced to close after an 8-month-old baby and four staff members tested positive for COVID-19. The Jesse Ketchum Early Learning & Child Care Centre is one of the seven emergency centres to care for children of essential workers. City officials have confirmed the Toronto COVID-19 outbreak is the first to occur in a childcare centre.

According to a City of Toronto press release, the centre has been shut down for 14 days as it goes through the process of "deep cleaning."

"Staff and the 58 children who attended the child care centre from April 21 to April 28 will be asked to remain at home for 14 days from their last day at the child care centre and will be excluded from all Toronto emergency child care centres as a precautionary measure for this same period," says a news release.

The daycare, which is located at Yonge and Davenport, has been open to the kids of essential workers since March 31.

The baby who tested positive for the virus on Wednesday did not first show symptoms, according to CTV News

However, the 8-month-old later got tested after its parents began to notice symptoms appearing.

The statement assures that infection prevention procedures were followed at the facility, as were "small group sizes for rooms, daily screening, including temperature checks of children and staff."

The City has expressed regret at the closure due to the fact that it was a facility that many frontline workers rely on.

“We’re concerned and certainly disappointed to hear of the circumstances and disappointed to have to close the centre because we know it was providing a much needed service to essential workers in our city,” Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Eileen de Villa told reporters

Despite preventative measures, we have been seeing outbreaks at essential businesses and facilities all over the GTA.

Several GTA hospitals have been battling outbreaks, with staff members and patients testing positive for COVID-19.

Earlier this week, it was announced that SickKids was dealing with patients and staff falling ill to the virus.
