Statistics Canada recently released a report that ranked Toronto as the third safest city in the country based on the Crime Severity Index (which accounts for the total number of crimes in a city and their severities). However, despite having one of the lowest crime rates in Canada, there is still a prevailing perception that Toronto is one of the most dangerous places to live in. READ ALSO: Canada Is Ranked The 2nd Best Country In The World A poll conducted by Mainstreet Research, which surveyed around 4,200 Canadians, revealed that more people view Toronto as unsafe. 47% of participants view Toronto as unsafe, in comparison to 46% who view it safe and 7% who aren't sure. The rankings of 15 Canadian cities, based on perception of safety from most to least safe are as follows: Ottawa Charlottetown Moncton St. John’s, N.L. Quebec City Regina Halifax Victoria Vancouver Calgary Edmonton Saskatoon Montreal Toronto Winnipeg Quito Maggi, the President of Mainstreet Research, said: “Perceptions compared to Statistics Canada's Crime Severity Index yields some interesting comparisons. Toronto for example, ranks 14th out of 15 in terms of perceived safety, but ranks second behind just Quebec City and narrowly ahead of Ottawa which topped the rank of safest cities as perceived by Canadians."
