Toronto may be a hub of multiculturalism, but unfortunately, the city's efforts to celebrate all cultures and nationalities haven't prevented racial discrimination from rearing its ugly head from time to time. Recently it was one of the city’s hottest hangouts, Toronto’s Cactus Club Cafe, that was facing such accusations.\nCactus Club became the subject of a fiery Twitter thread last week after a local DJ slammed the restaurant for enforcing discriminatory rules. “Cactus Club really canceled their DJs on caribana weekend? Between this and them telling me to “not cater to the caribana crowd” I don’t know how y’all can still eat there,” DJ Big Jacks tweeted on Sunday.\nDJ Big Jacks followed up his tweet with a list of accounts from another DJ who reportedly worked at Cactus Club. The tweets quickly gained traction and dozens of replies.\nNarcity reached out to both the DJ and Cactus Club for comments on the matter but have yet to hear back.\nCactus Club really canceled their DJs on caribana weekend? What a joke. That whole “diversity is our strength” statement goes out the window when it comes to black people 🤨— DJ Shem (@itsdjshem) August 12, 2019\nI’ll say it on here too. Toronto fols there are many other restaurants in the area that you could spend your money. Especially at Black Owned restaurants in the city pls. Cactus Club is not for us and will not care about us anytime soon. https://t.co/M7H97cSvlJ— Mary (She/Her) (@maryasekome) August 14, 2019\nCactus Club is a Toronto based club that for years has displayed blatant levels of racism towards minorities especially black people. I've been their twice and both experiences were horrid. They deem any and every black person as a thug, & I've heard their staff call us monkeys. https://t.co/Ktg8OBl9xY— D (@DIIJAHHHH) August 13, 2019\nwow... cactus club is literally my favourite place to go in Toronto are you serious https://t.co/EKlHBcETzG— kardei$ha (@kardeishaprovo) August 13, 2019\nI’m down to organize and execute a mass dine&dash at both Cactus Club locations in Toronto.— CHAMPIONSHIP TORONTO LEGEND (@beepee29) August 13, 2019\nI didn’t expected this lol but in hindsight of this wreckless tweet our best course of action as a people would be to boycott the aforementioned restaurant voice our displeasure publicly and seek out other establishments where our hard earned dollars & patronage are appreciated.— CHAMPIONSHIP TORONTO LEGEND (@beepee29) August 13, 2019\npic.twitter.com/JhbMc22UQm— MANIFINESSE WITH FAITH👑 (@Amethyst_Amaris) August 13, 2019\nYeooooooo fammmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm “yeaaa uhhhhh.... let me get the largest most expensive steak you have and the longest aged bottle...... for each person at my table good kind sir” 😂👋🏾— Biggsberg🏁 (@BlastoffBiggs) August 13, 2019\nLet's do it!!!— AR.TO (@thereslaross) August 14, 2019\nI hate that place I’m so down.— immigrant (@mikacha) August 13, 2019\nEven the Toronto Raptors' official DJ weighed in:\nYoooooo!!!! One of the restaurants is located at First Canadian Place and the other at Etobicoke's Sherway Gardens. It’s worth noting that although these allegations are serious, they have not been proven at this time.
