Attending a post-secondary institution can be absolutely insanely stressful and be a real drain on students mental health. It can be even worse for people who suffer from mental health issues before they even walk in the building. The University of Toronto has put in place a new policy intended to help people suffering from mental health issues, but advocates say it does nothing but make the problem worse. @venusli_8embedded via U of T has approved a plan can that allows the school to force students suffering from a mental health breakdown, who become a threat to themselves or others, to take a leave of absence from their studies. Some mental health advocates though see this as the school punishing students for their own mental state and discriminate against those who suffer from mental health issues. Don’t do this U of T. We know that universities have an adverse affect on mental well-being for so many. We need more supports, more access, more accountability, not less. https://t.co/A6UHmj04Ja — Jennifer Poole (@jpoolej) June 27, 2018 U of T doesn't care about mental health. We have it far more stressful than other universities yet our mental health facilities fail to provide proper support to students in need. RIP to the student that committed suicide on campus. — Shehzeen. (@TheShehzeenist) June 28, 2018 One group, called Students for Barrier-Free Access, says that the policy will likely deter students who suffer from mental illness to come forward because they won’t want to be told to go home from school. Advocates say the school should look at more ways to prevent students from suffering a mental health breakdown instead of simply forcing them to take a leave of absence from the university. The school says the mandatory leave of absence would only be applied in extreme circumstances. @kris.panembedded via Each student will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis and that the university will decide how long a leave of absence should be, if a student on leave can still have access to things in the university such as the library and what affect the school year will have on a student on leave and their tuition costs. If a student is told to take a mandatory leave of absence but disagrees they can request a review of their situation and file an appeal with the university tribunal. Source: City News
