Student debt and the cost of living can be a burden, but there are ways around it. SeekingArrangement has released its 2020 list of universities in Canada with the highest number of "sugar babies" and it makes for interesting reading. And the University of Toronto was scored as by far the top "sugar baby" school in the country.

Living in the 6ix can be expensive, that's a given. So, some students have resorted to finding their stable source of income through sugar daddies.

If you're wondering what a sugar "baby" or "daddy" is, wonder no more. A sugar baby is a man or a woman who tends to receive gifts, cash, or other perks from a wealthy individual, who would themselves be the "sugar daddy" or "sugar mommy" in the equation.

According to the list published by the "sugar daddy" website SeekingArrangement, the University of Toronto has 1,158 registered members.

That makes U of T the most, erm, prolific school in Canada in terms of students who are registered on the website.

And by a remarkable distance, too. The second-ranked university in the country, London's Western, has 777 registered "sugars."

And, it seems that as the cost of education increases, the numbers have gone up.

"The number of university students in the Canada seeking Sugar Daddies and Sugar Mommas rose 44 percent from the previous year," reads the SeekingArrangement website.

"On average, students receive a monthly allowance of $2,925 among other benefits, including networking opportunities and career or business advantages."

This isn't the first time U of T has been at the top of the list, as it sat in the No. 1 spot last year, too.

But the number of members has actually gone down since 2019, from 1,170 to 1,158 in 2020.

When it comes to other Toronto universities, Ryerson comes in fourth and York is seventh.

Across the province of Ontario, meanwhile, within the top 10 schools, joining Western in second are Wilfrid Laurier in fifth, Queen's in sixth, and the University of Ottawa in ninth.

So it seems Ontario is the place to be for student sugar, although Alberta has four of its own universities on the list, too.

Perhaps it shouldn't come as a surprise. After all, student debt in Ontario is so bad that just a few months ago, some students from Ryerson held a protest against Doug Ford's OSAP cuts.

Finding a job right after school is over and making sure you're on time for your student payments before interest racks up is another issue Ontario students face.

That isn't the case for students in B.C., though, who had their interest eliminated.

SeekingArrangement explains: "Meeting the right Sugar Daddy offers collegiate Sugar Babies access to expanded networking opportunities, mentorship and financial benefits that come with building a relationship with someone established and successful."

The topic of "sugar babies" and "sugar daddies" has often been seen as some sort of taboo.

But, with how expensive it is to live in Toronto, you gotta do what you gotta do to make it through.
