Have you ever wondered why Toronto is known as "the 6ix"? Well, most Canadians are asking the same question. "Why is Toronto called the 6?" was Google's top trending question of 2019 in Canada, according to a news release.\nGoogle has released its most trending searches in 2019 for Canada, and Toronto dominates the board. While the Raptors were searched more times than elections, it seems that Toronto also stood out when it came to the most asked question.\nWhen it came to the top trending questions of 2019 that started in "Why", "Why is Toronto called the 6?" was first on the list.\nFollowed by, "Why did Don Cherry get fired?" and "Why is blackface offensive?"\nWhile it seems like most Canadians have no idea why Toronto is called the 6ix, Torontonians seem to know the answer pretty well.\nWhile some people from Toronto may never call their city "the 6ix" in day to day speech, it has, however, become a term for our city that Drake coined, when he released his 2016 album Views From The 6. Since that album came out, "the 6ix" is what everyone knows us as.\nView this post on Instagram Wednesday 📷 @k_raash A post shared by Torontoclx (@torontoclx) on Dec 11, 2019 at 6:20am PST\nBefore him, Kardinal Offishall introduced the term "T Dot", which everyone was using in the 2000s before "the 6ix" took off. However, while the 6ix has taken the internet by storm, one of the more common terms for Toronto is "Tuh-ron-oh". Yes, the second "t" is silent. "The 6ix" is a branded version of Toronto that Drake created, and we've gotta hand it to him, it's stuck.\nThe term is derived from the first official area code for Toronto, which was 416. Drake once told Jimmy Fallon that he was debating on calling it the 4, but later decided on the 6ix.\n“We were debating on The Four, but I went tail-end on them and went 6. And at one point Toronto was broken up into six areas (Old Toronto, Scarborough, East York, North York, Etobicoke and York), so it’s all clicking man,” he told Fallon in an interview.\nWe can all definitely agree that it is the new catchphrase for Toronto that's been around for years now.\nFYI we call it the 6ix and don’t let anyone tell you different.— John Poole (@jfpoole) August 5, 2018\nThat’s what we call it my guy TO or TDot or The 6ix we don’t like using real words.— Richard James ⚪️ (@pipcomiccom1) November 4, 2019\nI remember when we used to call Toronto, t-dot. Now it's the 6ix. I still don't get it, I'm not cool so I'll stick to Toronto— Alison Valentim (@alivalentimxo) February 5, 2015\nOf course, Twitter users seem to agree that the 6ix is the term to use, "FYI we call it the 6ix and don't let anyone tell you different."\nWhile others have, of course, shown their confusion, "I remember when I use to call Toronto, t-dot. Now it's the 6ix. I still don't get it, I'm not cool so I'll stick to Toronto.\nRegardless, it seems the 6ix has got the most Google searches for a reason this year.\nThere are stories everywhere.
