Toronto's H&M flagship store at Yonge & Dundas appears to have been vandalized with spray paint overnight.

Though slightly abstract, it looks like the word “torture” has been splattered across the illuminated walls outside of the Eaton Centre location.

A maintenance crew was seen outside of the Eaton Centre early Tuesday morning beginning the removal of the graffiti.

The damage comes after H&M received widespread backlash after an advertisement featuring a black child modelling a sweatshirt with the slogan “coolest monkey in the jungle” was posted on their website.

The ad was widely criticized for being racist, including by pop star The Weekend, who said he would not be collaborating with the company again after seeing the sweater.

After releasing an apology, H&M took down the image from their channels and removed the garment from their product offering. “We are deeply sorry that the picture was taken, and we also regret the actual print,” it said, adding that it would avoid similar situations in the future.

But destruction to the fashion groups stores has continued. H&M stores in South Africa have been trashed over the issue. 

This is the first known act of vandalization against H&M in Toronto.
