A scary incident took place over the weekend when an Air Canada flight made an emergency landing in Vancouver after one of the engines failed. According to CTV, a plane departing from Vancouver International Airport had to make an emergency landing back at YVR Airport on the afternoon of Sunday, June 23. The plane was allegedly heading to Alaska in a three-hour flight.
The incident took place at around 2:30 PM. The flight departed on time and it travelled towards the destination of Anchorage, before turning around mid-flight.
A spokesperson with Air Canada told CTV that the flight had returned to Vancouver after an engine shutdown. At the time, there were 112 people on board.
The spokesperson claimed the aircrafts are designed to fly on one engine and that pilots are trained for situations like the one that took place Sunday.
One passenger shared his experience with the flight and emergency landing on his Twitter.
Passenger Katy Yacovitch told CTV that beverage service had just begun when the flight attendant noticed an odd smell near the 20th row of the plane. According to Yacovitch, that is when the seat-back screens on the plane went dark and they paused beverage services.
No other announcements were made, but the plane had clearly turned around. After turning around, the captain came on the intercom to announce that they would be making an emergency landing in Vancouver in 10 minutes due to an “abnormal sensor reading.”
The passenger claimed there was “a lot of vibration in the middle of the plane.” Once the plane landed with success, the pilot announced that there had been an engine failure mid-air.
Air Canada gave food vouchers to the passengers as they waited for a new plane that was scheduled to board later that afternoon at 5 PM.
